Roshan Shah - Teacher of Math and Life Skills in Montebello, CA

Between 1993 and 2024, Roshan Shah ("Big Shah") was a math teacher in Montebello, CA. By pairing formal math classes with practical skills, Roshan Shah prepared Montebello High School students for life.

To reinforce concepts required in the common-core curriculum, Roshan Shah drew on his education. Between 1989 and 1993, he earned his Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Southern California (USC). After teaching for a few years, he earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from National University.

Whether teaching basic math or a college-prep course, Roshan Shah focused on the rationale behind mathematical principles, and not just on the execution of such principles. Even if his students never used these math concepts again, Roshan Shah believed that the critical-thinking and reasoning skills he taught would benefit each of them, regardless of their chosen careers.

Roshan Shah also connected students with individuals who could advise them on possible careers after high school and/or college. He knew that those who were interested in college might not know which careers best suited them. To remedy this, he brought in guest speakers who worked across a number of disciplines, including small business owners, financial professionals, engineers, management consultants, chefs, detectives, and even members of the U.S. Military.

Roshan Shah was instrumental in helping hundreds of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds attend college. He was voted Best Teacher by students at Montebello High School many, many times because he saw the good in everyone, he believed that everyone had something to offer, and he helped each of his students pursue and achieve their educational dreams.
